Motorola i605 Phone (Nextel)

If you're a professional on the go and you need a rugged phone that will stand up to all you dish out, the Motorola i605 is for you. With a huge, stunning screen, as well as support for Bluetooth wireless technology, and Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie service, the i605 is a powerful mobile companion.

Design
The i605 is built extra-tough for construction and utilities industry users. In fact, it conforms to military standard 810F for blowing rain, humidity, and salt fog. That means it's designed to withstand exposure to rain, sleet, and snow. The rubber encasing, interior linings and seals protect the phone's antenna, speakerphone, keys, battery door, and accessory connections against water intrusion.

The phone sports a very large, 176 x 220 TFT color display with a stunning 262,000 colors. The screen is optimized for outdoor use, with enhanced clarity for reading text, graphics, and phone icons. The speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. There's also a 2.5-millimeter headset jack for connecting a hands-free headset. Of course, you can also use the i605's Bluetooth capability to connect a wireless hands-free headset.

Calling Features
The i605's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More polyphonic ringtones can be added via download from the Nextel Online service. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names, while a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Meanwhile, you can access the last 20 sent and received calls for quick call return or number storage via the recent calls list. There's even an "airplane mode" that allows you to turn off network connections while still using programs, games, voice record features, and the datebook. And if you have an emergency, the i605's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i605 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone, or with entire groups of Direct Connect users. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America, Canada and Latin America. With the i605's powerful Direct Talk function you can also communicate in walkie-talkie mode when you're not even connected to the network. The system works anywhere, anytime between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles (range will vary based on terrain and conditions). Direct Talk provides a reliable back-up communications tool in times of emergency, network outage, or when traveling to remote areas not under Nextel coverage such as hiking, cruise vacations or inside buildings. And last but not least, the i605 features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i605 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text, images and audio messaging. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i605, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone.

Another Nextel innovation supported by the i605 is Nextel Direct Send. Simply push a button and instantly send all your contact info to another Nextel phone. It's an easy way to get people into your contact list fast. The i605 ships with a calendar, as well as a voice recording application and a time and date clock. You can also use the phone's Bluetooth capability to wirelessly transmit data from a Bluetooth-enabled device.

The i605 is packed with a number of subscription-based Java applications, many of which focus on increasing business effectiveness. TeleNav for audible GPS-based driving directions is included, as is Road Pathway for fleet management and tracking. You'll also get Trimble Outdoors for GPS-based outdoor navigation and 1KTV multimedia for news. Games include demo versions of Space Invaders and Boulder Dash M.E..

The Motorola i605 weighs 5.9 ounces and measures 4.9 x 2.0 x 1.1 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 290 minutes of digital talk time, and up to 240 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the IDEN 800 frequency. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Samsung S105 Phone (T-Mobile)

Impressive in terms of sheer design, this little flip phone approaches perfection. A combination of equal parts efficiency and flash, the Samsung S105 offers a comprehensive package of standard features and fun, useful extras. When closed, the phone appears alluringly hi-tech with its silver finish, rectangular body, and external LCD display, which shows date, time, battery level, service icon, and caller ID. And, even though the phone only weighs four ounces, it still feels substantial. When flipped open, the S105 doesn't disappoint. Its brilliant full-color LCD with its animated menus, uniquely shaped buttons, and blue backlit keypad numerals dazzles the eye. The folks at Samsung certainly know the power of symmetry, form, and color.

But what good is a cool-looking phone without practical features? The S105 is loaded with them. Extensive call records allow you to view missed incoming and outgoing calls, and the length of total and individual calls. The organizer contains a to-do list, calculator, alarm, currency exchange estimator, and calendar, in which you can write yourself memos for any given day. You can also read and write messages in text format (with SMS support from T-Mobile). The S105 also provides nine precomposed, time-saving templates for simple messages you can send in lieu of typing them yourself. Late for a date? Simply scroll and choose, "I am late and will be there in ___ minutes" and hit Send. These templates can of course be edited and saved. You can also attach sound or graphic objects to messages.

The phone book in the S105 allows for 500 entries in phone memory, and another 250 in the SIM card. Contacts can be organized in up to 10 groups, with each group having its own ring tone and graphic display. You can store up to nine speed-dial numbers.

When it comes to the ring tone, you’ve got many choices. In fact, customizing these settings might bring up unusual quandaries, such as deciding whether or not the phone should play "Carmen" or "Valse des Fleurs" when you get a call. If you’re feeling retro, you can just set the phone to ring like an old-fashioned rotary dial. There are 20 of these polyphonic ringer options to choose from. You can also set your alert to vibration, vibration plus melody, or display light only. Speaking of light, users can even change the color of the service indicator light (eight options), alter the contrast of both LCD displays, choose from 12 full-color animated wallpaper displays, and select menu color themes.

Changing the appearance and sounds of phones is great, but what about mission-critical features? In our tests we found the voice quality to be excellent. A long-distance call from a busy downtown Seattle street corner was successful. The answering party did not hear a huge truck rumble by, thanks to the phone's microphone noise-cancellation properties. The phone’s network services menu allows broad control over call waiting, call forwarding, and caller ID, as well as network selection (automatic or manual), and band selection (GSM 900/1,800 or GSM 1,900) for travel in foreign countries. Users can manipulate and store settings such as the SMS service center used for sending messages, and the channels on which broadcast messages are received. Depending on your service plan, the WAP-enabled browser allows access to mobile-friendly Internet sites. You can store URL favorites and set a home page, as well as download Java-enabled games and additional sounds for your phone. An infrared port lets you beam data to other IR-equipped units.

All of the many features of the S105 are easily accessed via the phone’s simple navigation interface. An oval-shaped four-position button is used for scrolling, and soft keys to the left and right allow for selection or cancellation/return to a previous menu. There is also a volume button on the side and a headphone jack for the hands-free ear microphone (included). For those times when you’re stuck at the airport, there are three full-color games loaded on the S105. Of these, we like My Pet (you have to see it).

Many of us want, even crave, the most futuristic devices, even ones that will provoke the curiosity and admiration of friends. To this end, the Samsung S105 should be the perfect choice. It’s a spectacular instrument that does the basic work of a cell phone--and much more--in grand fashion. The S105 has it all and never disappoints. --John Bosch
